Recently, Goyang Convention Visitors Bureau and Sono Calm Goyang have challenged themselves to get reviewed for the sustainability certification ISO20121 (event sustainability management system). MICE events not only uses a large amount of resources and energy but also produces many wastes, and when the event is being planned and operated, various problems between cooperative firms and supply company occurs as well. ISO20121 is a certification system invented by the ISO/PC 250 committee in July 2021 to prepare and minimize economic, social, and environmental problems that can occur in the MICE industry.
Goyang Convention Visitors Bureau (DMO) is an urban organization dedicated to urban marketing in Goyang City and is in charge of various programs such as attracting and hosting MICE, hosting Goyang Destination Network (GDW), and improving MICE sustainability in Goyang City. In particular, we are pre-emptively responding to the practice of sustainability by establishing a city brand as the "Capital of Sustainable MICE in Korea, Goyang City". The five-star hotel Sono Calm Goyang (hotel, venue) is a venue that attracts and hosts various MICE events, and it serves as a supplier of the MICE industry in Goyang City.

In order to receive a pass on the certification this year, both organizations has to put various sustainability activities into practice. Then, what type of activities must be conducted in order to receive a ISO20121 MICE sustainability certification? First, identify management issues of each organization on sustainability and gather opinion from different stakeholders. Based on this information, sustainability strategies and plans are established based on things like importance evaluation.
Operating system of P(planning), D(executing), C(checking), and A(improving) needs to be executed from discovering issue to reflux on monitoring based on the ISO20121 principles. Of course, the procedure needs to be documented through things like manual. All of these activities and the results are submitted to Korea Standards Association, and ISO20121 certified review organization, for a certification review.

Through certification review, the Visitors Bureau and Sono Clam will be able to systematize sustainable management strategies as well as practical strategies. By receiving consultation from professional consulting agencies, they will also be able to establish a sustainable operating system and improvement plans for sustainable Goyang MICE events. Through these activities, these two institutions will create a virtuous cycle within the Goyang MICE industry ecosystem and this will also help in strengthening in attracting MICE events in Goyang City.
In addition to the two organizations, any MICE-related organization or companies such as government, public institutions, associations, and other organizations, exhibition halls, convention centers, hotels, and other venues, PCO, PEO, DMC, and other agencies, service industries such as accommodation, food, beverage, and transportation agencies and DMO such as convention center and exclusive organization on tourism marketing can all participate in ISO20121.
In Korea, starting with Lotte Hotel and Daegu Convention Bureau in 2015, ISO20121 has been certified to Incheon Asian Games (2016), Pyeongchang Winter Olympics (2018), Jeju Convention Bureau (2021), Korean Tourism Organization (Convention Bureau), Incheon Tourism Organization (Convention Bureau), ICC Jeju, and Kim Dae-jung Convention Center (2022). These two institutions will try their best this year to put their name on the certification queue. We ask for your interest and your support!
