Due to the unrepresented COVID-19 pandemic, the world was literally in 'a panic'. Although there is no clear source of COVID-19, experts around the world think that it is a natural disaster that was caused by climate change due to industrialization. Before the pandemic, discussions on sustainable development or environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management that came first in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, which will bring rapid technological advancements, have recently been on the rise.
ESG, in particular, is a marketing term and is an abbreviation for non-financial elements of a company such as environment, social, and governance. It has a comprehensive meaning of sustainability, so it is used interchangeably these days. MICE industry is meeting-based so it is more urgent to use ESG management strategies and sustainability than any other industry since it utilizes large amounts of resources such as humans, booths, transportation, food and beverage, and energy (water and electricity).
We will call these activities of efforts in the MICE industry "sustainable MICE" for convenience. Some companies are often unable to participate in sustainable MICE since they do not know how to start or how to execute sustainable MICE. If there was any type of manual for this, companies can build strategies from it. Goyang Convention Visitors Bureau has been proactively preparing for sustainable MICE before the pandemic. Each time, we applied action strategies to real projects and events. We of course studied sustainable MICE manuals in MICE cities around the world. Goyang Convention Visitors Bureau has delivered the finished manual to the organizers of MICE events in Goyang and encouraged companies to participate in sustainable MICE.
Goyang Convention Visitors Bureau has divided sustainable MICE into △hosting facilities △accommodation △transportation △F&B △event management and △post management and has provided an action guide. In the case of hosting facilities, we recommend setting up eco-friendly hosting goals and installing recycling bins throughout the venue. We also recommend the use of digital signatures, electronic documents, and use of applications to replace printed materials. Of course, we have equipped our venue with convenient facilities and systems for the disabled so that the disabled can conveniently use our venue.
In the case of accommodation, we restrict the use of disposable products and we have placed an action manual at a well-visible place for the guest to refrain from applying for daily cleaning services and to minimize laundry. What are some practical measures that we can place on the transportation sector where the carbon emission is at the most? Practical alternatives such as using public transportation, riding eco-friendly and hydrogen taxis, prohibiting idling, walking to distances within 1 km, and using shared bicycles when using MICE-hosted facilities are prepared and recommended.

On top of that, we make sure that 25% of the food that is provided from the event uses local or organic agricultural products and it's recommended to use reusable materials for things like tablecloth, napkins, plates, and cups. To reduce food waste, we should allow people to pack leftover food. In event operation, we actively make sure that the obligations that are specified in the contract are fulfilled to induce fair trade and the city and the bureau provides additional support for various education and goods to contribute to job creation by utilizing local talent.
In the 70th UN General Assembly in 2015, they adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the slogan of "not a person being excluded". The common 17 goals that humanity should achieve by 2030 included sustainable clean energy, ending poverty, providing good work and economic growth, response to climate change, cities and communities, and global partnerships.
Recently, Goyang City and the bureau have presented the macroeconomic goal of becoming a leader in Korea's sustainable development through ESG management and preoccupying sustainable MICE, and through this, Goyang will have a competitive advantage in city marketing. This is our will to lay the foundation for sustainable MICE that can coexist through fair and transparent ethical management while protecting the environment.
