The Goyang Convention & Visitors Bureau (Chairman Lee Donghwan of Goyang CVB, Mayor of Goyang Special City) is garnering high expectations from being selected for major MICE industry-related open call projects in the first quarter of 2023. The organization secured a total of 775 million won in project budget in the first quarter alone through three open calls organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The projects selected this year are the “International Conference Complex Revitalization Project (500 million won)” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the “Regional MICE Industry Revitalization Project (210 million won)” by the Korea Tourism Organization, and the “Gyeonggi Region Specialized Convention Discovery and Promotion Project (65 million won)” by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization. These achievements confirm Goyang’s competitiveness and differentiation as a leading MICE destination in Korea.
Goyang CVB has engaged in a heated competition with Korea’s leading MICE cities in every project. In particular, in the case of the 2023 International Conference Complex Revitalization Project announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism at the end of February, Goyang Special City achieved the feat of being selected for five consecutive years since its first selection as the international conference complex in 2018, making the competitiveness of Goyang as a MICE destination in Korea goes without saying.
In particular, the 500 million won (250 million won in national and 250 million won in regional funds) for the revitalization project secured this year is an increase of 160 million won compared to last year. Through this project, Goyang CVB plans to strengthen the domestic and international recognition of “GCC GOYANG,” the brand of Goyang’s international conference complex, through online and offline advertisements in media home and abroad while also providing consulting support for MICE businesses in Goyang and strengthening the connectivity and accessibility of accumulation centers (shuttle bus operation).
At the end of March, Goyang CVB secured 210 million won from the “2023 Regional MICE Industry Revitalization Project “organized by the Korea Tourism Organization after fierce competition among 12 cities, provinces, and local governments nationwide. Through this project, Goyang CVB aims to ▲ expand sustainable MICE (ESG) step by step ▲ strengthen competitiveness in bidding and hosting domestic and international MICE events and ▲ activate MICE alliances and accumulation centers.
In fact, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Goyang CVB continued to attract and host various international events such as the Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery’s International Seminar and the Pokemon Go Safari Zone event. The Bureau also achieved its mid- to long-term goals of earning more than 3 billion won in sales of MICE incubation center companies in Goyang (as of 2022) and producing middle-aged MICE professionals for six consecutive years. In particular, in the “sustainable MICE” sector, which has been the topic of discussion among MICE cities worldwide during the pandemic, Goyang CVB also marked remarkable results after long preparation and efforts by ranking No. 1 in the Asia-Pacific region (No. 18 in the world) in the Global MICE Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-I). As such, Goyang CVB is gradually accumulating achievements that other MICE cities in other regions cannot match.
Finally, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization’s “Gyeonggi Regional Specialized Convention Discovery and Promotion Project” is a MICE promotion project to discover specialized conventions related to regional infrastructure industries and sociocultural fields to sustain them as representative global events of Gyeonggi-do. In short, it aims to select the “representative international conferences of Gyeonggi-do” and focus on fostering it at the provincial level. The “Goyang Destination Week (GDW),” which is celebrating its 7th anniversary this year, was “selected for the third consecutive year” and secured a budget of 65 million won. Besides GDW, the other international conferences representing Gyeonggi-do selected this year include the World Heritage City Forum in Suwon and the Surfcon Korea in Siheung.
GDW is the first international conference on MICE destinations in Asia and the Pacific region hosted by Goyang Special City and organized by Goyang CVB. It reaches beyond the local area to the world and brings together current and former professionals in the MICE industry to discuss current issues and seek solutions. Participants discuss a wide range of topics, from local challenges to generational conflicts, resource allocation, human resource issues, and changes in MICE services. This year’s GDW 2023 will be held at the Sono Calm Goyang Hotel from August 23rd to 26th with the topic, “Return of MICE.” We look forward to seeing you there!
